Phonely’s Who Called Me – July 2025 in Review
If you’ve ever wondered, “who called me from this phone number?” you’re not alone. Every day, people across the UK get calls from unknown numbers, and many of these turn out to be scams.
At Phonely, our free reverse phone lookup tool helps you find out who’s behind those mystery calls.
In July 2025, our community reported thousands of suspicious numbers, helping everyone stay safer. We also add these reported numbers to our blacklist, so all our clients are protected from known scam calls.
Let’s dive into the numbers, the types of scams we saw, and how you can stay safe.
How Can I Find Out Who Called Me for Free?
With Phonely’s Who Called Me tool, you can type in a phone number and find out who it is without spending a penny. Our community-driven platform lets users share reports about calls they receive, so you can quickly see if a number is linked to a scam or a legitimate caller. In July 2025, we saw a huge number of reports, with 17,473 calls flagged as dangerous or harassing. These numbers are immediately added to our blacklist, ensuring our clients are protected from future calls from these sources. This shows how active our community is in keeping everyone informed and safe.

Banking Scams in July 2025
Banking scams were a big problem last month. Around 1000 numbers were marked by users as “Banking scam”. Scammers often pretend to be from your bank’s security department to trick you. They might say there are two strange transactions on your account and ask you to press 1 to speak to a representative. That “representative” is usually a scammer trying to get access to your bank account.
Here are some of the dangerous numbers reported in July 2025 for banking scams:
- 07424189791: Searched 129 times.
- 07377685520: Here a user said he lost £10,000
- 07554171070: An automated voice message stating it was your bank security calling because two unauthorised payments had been attempted. This is a classic banking scam.
These numbers have been added to our blacklist to protect Phonely clients. If you get a call like this, hang up right away. If you’re unsure if it’s really your bank, dial 159 on your phone to connect directly to your bank. This avoids googling and possibly landing on a fake website with a scam number. Never share your bank details or press buttons to connect with someone you don’t know.
HMRC Scams: A Growing Threat
Another common scam in July was callers pretending to be from HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs). These scammers often say you owe taxes and threaten you with arrest or fines if you don’t pay immediately. They might ask you to press 1 to talk to someone or demand payment through gift cards or bank transfers. HMRC won’t ask you for payment over the phone, and they send letters if anything is wrong. Legitimate HMRC calls will never ask for payments like this or threaten you over the phone.
Here are some numbers linked to HMRC scams reported in July 2025:
- 07309540064: Fake HMRC tax demands.
- 07417406626: Threatening legal action.
- 07852960561: Claiming unpaid taxes.
Why Phonely’s Tool Helps
Our platform makes it easy to check “who called me from this phone number” by letting you type in a phone number and find out who it is. In July 2025, our users shared 17,473 comments about suspicious calls, giving details like what the caller said or if they left a voicemail. This helps everyone spot scams faster. For example, many reported silent calls (567 reports) and energy scams (770 reports) alongside banking and HMRC scams. Every reported number is added to our blacklist, ensuring our clients are protected from these threats.
These numbers are now on our blacklist, keeping our clients safe from these scams. If you’re asking, “who is calling me from this number?” and it’s one of these, don’t engage. Hang up and contact HMRC directly using the official number on their website. You can also report these calls to Action Fraud to help stop scammers.
By sharing your own experiences, you help others stay safe. If you get a call from an unknown number, use Phonely’s Who Called Me to check it and add your report. Even small details, like the time of the call or what the caller said, can make a big difference.
Tips to Stay Safe
To avoid falling for scams, here are some simple steps:
- Don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t know. Let them go to voicemail.
- Use Phonely’s free tool to see if others have reported the number.
- If you’re unsure if a call is from your bank, dial 159 to connect directly to them.
- Block suspicious numbers on your phone to stop repeat calls.
- Sign up for the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) to cut down on marketing calls.
- Never give out personal or bank details to unexpected callers.
If you think a call might be a scam, report it to Action Fraud or your phone provider. In Scotland, you can call Police Scotland on 101. Sharing these reports on Phonely also helps warn others and adds the number to our blacklist for client protection.
