137 More UK Areas Set to Lose Copper Phone Lines – Is Yours on the List?
Are you still using a traditional landline phone? Then this warning is for you.
Openreach has just announced that 137 more areas across the UK are being added to its “Stop Sell” list – that means no more copper-based phone lines. In plain English:
The old landline system is being switched off.
Once your area hits 75% full fibre coverage, the old copper lines (the ones used for your landline) will no longer be offered. And eventually, your current landline will stop working unless you switch to a digital phone service.
This isn’t years away – this is happening now
Openreach is calling this Tranche 21, and it affects over 850,000 homes.
By August 2026, nearly 9 million homes will have copper completely removed. You won’t be able to get your old landline service back – and if you haven’t switched, you may be left with no working phone at all.
For many, this is a real concern, especially if you rely on your landline every day. Maybe it’s your only phone. Maybe it’s how family check you’re OK. Or maybe it’s just familiar and comfortable.
So what can you do?
