The Next Batch Has Been Revealed: Is Your Area on the Landline Switch-Off List?
Still using a traditional landline? The UK is retiring the old copper network in phases and moving everyone to digital (VoIP) services. This landline switch-off is rolling out area-by-area using “Stop Sell” rules: once an exchange reaches around 75% full-fibre (FTTP) coverage, Openreach stops selling copper-based products in that area and starts the countdown to withdrawal.
What that means for you: if your area is on the “Stop Sell” path, you won’t be able to order or change copper services. You’ll need to move to a digital voice service to keep your home phone working.
What’s new right now?
Openreach continues to add exchanges to the programme in quarterly “tranches.” Two recent updates matter:
Tranche 21 (announced 85 days ago)
On 22 July 2025, Openreach named 137 exchanges that move into Stop Sell. Openreach called this Tranche 21, and it affected over 850,000 homes.
By August 2026, nearly 9 million homes will have copper completely removed. You won’t be able to get your old landline service back – and if you haven’t switched, you may be left with no working phone at all.
For many, this is a real concern, especially if you rely on your landline every day. Maybe it’s your only phone. Maybe it’s how family check you’re OK. Or maybe it’s just familiar and comfortable.
